Elderly Care in Honolulu HI

Heart disease is the number one cause of death for those 65 year of age or older. Eighty-five percent of heart damage occurs within the first two hours of having a heart attack. Early detection and Elderly-Care-in-Honolulu-HItreatment is vital to saving lives and diminishing any long-term disabilities, yet 50 percent of people experiencing a heart attack ignore the initial warning signs. Make sure that you and others that care for your parent know what signs to look for so they can get prompt medical treatment that can make all the difference.

Early Signs & Symptoms

Most people think of pressure in the chest with pain that radiates down one arm as the telltale sign of a heart attack. This may be the “picture-perfect” heart attack, but many start out with almost imperceptible clues.

  • Pain in the Jaw
  • Extreme Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Back Pain
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Nausea
  • Pain that travels down one or both arms
  • Pressure or discomfort in the chest
  • Sharp pain in chest when coughing or taking a deep breath
  • Cold sweat and light-headedness

Women often have less discernible symptoms than men such as pressure in the chest that comes and goes or mild pain in arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach.  Many report a feeling of indigestion.

The rule of thumb: if you are concerned about your loved one but uncertain if it is a heart attack, head to the nearest emergency department. The sooner medical treatment is started, the better the chances your loved one has. Thousands of heart cells die every minute the blood flow is stopped in the coronary artery. If blood flow can be reestablished within 20 minutes, cells can recover. After 20 minutes, cellular death occurs. Any heart attack may lead to cardiac arrest.

The good news: most people survive their first heart attack and return to a normal, productive life.

Elderly Care Provider

Leading a healthy lifestyle greatly reduces the risk of heart attacks. An elderly care provider can not only assist your loved one with the daily activities of living such as bathing or dressing, they can do the grocery shopping, prepare heart-healthy meals, accompany your parent on their daily walks and provide transportation to exercise class and important social functions. They can provide that all-important companionship so important to a life well-lived and the emotional aspects of a healthy heart.
